We’ve been so fortunate to visit an incredibly diverse list of countries on this trip and we feel that by the time we head home we’ll have maximised our time away without killing ourselves trying to pack too much in. We’ll have visited 18 countries which sounds like a lot but when I had a look at this I realised that by the time we head home I’ll have visited just 16% of the countries in the world. It’s crazy that there is still so much out there to explore!

It got me thinking and I started jotting down my future travel wish list. I know it sounds odd to be doing this when we’re on a round the world trip but you know how I like to have goals to work towards. I promise I’m not being greedy, I hope we’ll have a long time in the future to make these dreams a reality and I mostly just enjoyed checking out the beautiful photos! I’m sure this list will be added to over the years and hopefully we’ll get the chance to steadily tick off destinations too. I’m a fan of bucket lists but only when people actually try and achieve things on them, you’d better believe this list will be one of those.

1. Alaska

We’ve now been to 39 U.S States but Alaska has been the elusive number 1 on the wish list for as long as I can remember. I was gutted that we didn’t have time to visit during our USA trip last year. Provided we find employment we’re hoping to take a hiking holiday there next year.

2. Antarctica

A bizarre double whammy of visiting the National Antarctic Centre in Christchurch and simultaneously reading about Barry and Laura’s adventures has catapulted Antarctica up the priority order!

3. Austria

We’ve vowed to explore more of the countries on our own doorstep and the beautiful villages and cities of Austria are calling.

4. Camino de Santiago

Not a place but an incredible 500 mile pilgrimage through France and Spain that I have my heart set on one day. If you’re interested in the Camino take a look at the movie ‘The Way’ with Martin Sheen.

5. Caribbean Islands

I’ve never set foot on one of the Caribbean Islands and this needs to be rectified. Alison from See my Travels has ignited my interest with her stunning photos.

6. China

I want to be such a stereotypical tourist in China. The Great Wall, Terracotta Warriors, Chengdu, the Forbidden City…

7. Cinque Terre

I’m fortunate enough to have seen quite a lot of Italy but one place that has eluded me is Cinque Terre, just look at how beautiful it is.

8. Colombia

Sadly we don’t think we’ll have time for Colombia during our South American adventures this time. The cities, the beaches, the jungle – it has it all and I’d like to see it before it becomes more well known.

9. Easter Island

A combination of bizarre ruins and an exceedingly remote location has had me fascinated with this place for years.

10. Eastern Canada

The culture in Eastern Canada couldn’t be more different from the West and I’m keen to explore. Montreal, Ottawa, Prince Edward Island…

11. Faroe Islands

Ever since reading this post from Kate I’ve been amazed by the stunning landscape so close to our home.

12. Galapagos Islands

The wildlife just looks otherworldly and every single person I know that has been there lists it amongst their favourite places on earth.

13. Hawaii

Another one that’s been on the list for ages but it is so far away, we’re thinking about combining it with a west coast U.S trip at some point in the future.

14. Hong Kong

I’ve always had the impression that Hong Kong has a similar feel to Singapore. I may be completely wrong but I absolutely loved Singapore so it will remain on the list.

15. Iceland

We bizarrely went to Iceland with Paul’s parents for a day a few years ago, yes a single day! It sparked an interest and we’ll definitely be back at some point.

16. Ireland

Giant's Causeway, Northern Ireland

I am ashamed to say I’ve never been to Ireland. I’d like to explore both Northern and the Republic of Ireland but high up on the list is a road trip down the west coast, we really need to take advantage of those cheap flights from the UK.

17. Japan

It has to be done once and Mount Fuji looks incredible!

18. Jordan

Indiana Jones, that is all.

Some good friends of ours spent their honeymoon on safari in Kenya and their photos alone are enough of an incentive.

20. Madagascar

I like to move it, move it!

21. Manitoba

Seeing the Northern Lights is my number 1 bucket list activity. If we can’t see them in Alaska due to the time of year then this is my rather expensive fallback. Read this and tell me you don’t want to visit!

22. Montenegro

How many of my travel choices are inspired by movie locations? A lot! Montenegro has been on the list since watching Casino Royale and I want to visit before it becomes a really popular tourist destination.

23. Mexico

I’d never thought much about Mexico until the lovely Sarah Somewhere decided to move there for a year and taunt me with her amazing photos and descriptions of food!

24. Nepal

25. Patagonia

I’d say I want to hike in Patagonia more than anywhere else in the world. We are in South America during Southern Chile and Argentina’s ski season this year so it hasn’t worked out. The dream is to combine a holiday here with Antarctica.

26. St Petersburg

I have been desperate to visit St Petersburg since I was a little girl reading about the stunning palaces. We’ll get the chance to visit next summer when my brother-in-law ties the knot with his lovely fiancé.

27. Solomon Islands

The Solomon Islands

We didn’t have the best of time on our South Pacific visit this time round and I’ve heard the Solomon Islands still have the Robinson Crusoe feeling I was searching for.

28. South Africa

We decided not to visit Africa at all on our RTW purely because it’s easy to get to from the UK and jet lag free but we’ll definitely have a holiday there at some point.

29. Sri Lanka

Please don’t throw virtual rocks when I say that India holds no interest to me, Sri Lanka on the other hand… We even tried to find a flight out of South East Asia there this spring but it didn’t work out.

30. Switzerland

Some of the best hiking in the world on our doorstep – yes please!

31. Taiwan

A few months ago a rainy afternoon was spent watching a travel show about Taiwan, somewhere I’d never thought of visiting but that looked stunning. After falling victim to the persuasive powers of 20 Years Hence, it’s now on the list!

32. Wales

This is even worse than Ireland! Wales is literally a 3 hour drive from our house and I’ve never been. One of our challenges when we get home is to climb the 3 highest peaks in the UK, Snowdon in Wales will be getting a visit very soon.

So what did you think? What places are on your travel wish list?

I am glad that our posts on Taiwan are proving to be so persuasive! 😉 We have been fortunate to have loved most of the places we have visited in Asia (I guess that’s why we’ve now been here almost 11 months!), but Taiwan is definitely near the top of the list in terms of favorite countries thus far. So beautiful, and such great food… what more could you want?

On the other hand, we are probably done with China, though I won’t forever rule it out. I still think the southern parts have potential, but I don’t think even a free trip could entice me back to the northern parts (though the Great Wall was very cool… Forbidden City, not so much)!

If you make it to Eastern Canada after Tony & I are done traveling, I would hope you would spend a bit of time in Toronto. We’ll certainly have a bed or a couch for you if you do!

I think with China that we’d visit the top tourist things that we want to see in a quick flying visit, I might be surprised like I was with Vietnam but we’ll have to see. If we make it to Toronto when you guys are home you can bet that we’ll be in touch, I feel a food tour could be in order! 🙂

Great list! I agree with every single one (well, apart from Antarctica, I’ve experienced enough cold here in Canada thanks!). Easter Island has been a goal of mine for ages. With it being so remote, not sure that dream will ever happen though. If you do find yourselves swinging by Montreal on your travels and needs some tips or someone to show you round, just let me know 🙂

Thanks Charlie 🙂 Having finished writing the list I realised a huge proportion of places I want to visit are really cold, strange creature that I am! Eastern Canada is fairly high on the list since it’s so easy for us to fly to, if we’re in Montreal we’ll give you a shout 🙂
