Welcome and thanks for visiting!
We are a 30-something couple who hail from North Yorkshire in the UK. In June 2012 we quit our jobs, rented the house and started an adventure around the globe that would take 18 glorious months. We’ve been back in the UK for a few years, still travel addicts but trying to combine the need for travel with a home base. We aim to prove that you can still have an adventurous life while working a 9-5 and managed this pretty well over the last year. Maddie does the writing on here with Paul chipping in now and again, mostly with his ever popular foodie posts.
We met 12 years ago working for the same company but 100 miles apart. Paul wooed me with his famous charm and 8 months later I’d moved to sunny Harrogate in North Yorkshire. We followed the standard process of finding a job, buying a house and settling down for the most part until 7 years ago we took a trip to the U.S which changed everything.
I’ve loved to travel for as long as I can remember, my first real experience was InterRailing around Europe when I was 19 and that was it, I’d been bitten by the bug. Paul on the other hand, always loved the nice holidays we went on over the years but was never interested in extended travel.
In 2010 we took a road trip from Seattle to San Francisco which absolutely blew our minds and we came home with the wistful idea of travelling long term. It took another full year of over-analysing and soul searching before we finally decided that enough was enough. We had a nice house in a lovely part of the country, jobs that paid reasonably well and no real worries… and yet there was still something missing.
We spent the next 12 months saving, scrimping, planning and finally made the leap on the 10th June 2012!
I’m a North East girl, born and bred in Newcastle. I’m 35 years old and love to take photos, devour books like they’re going out of print and am an aspiring kitchen ninja. Before we started travelling I’d worked in IT marketing for 7 years and as a result am a bit of a tech geek, I love new technologies and have a real passion for social media. I’m at my happiest exploring the great outdoors and pushing my physical limits. Never more so than when climbing a mountain.
Paul is 39, a Yorkshire boy through and through and a massive fan of the mighty Leeds United. Paul is definitely the adrenaline junkie out of the pair of us and will try any extreme sport available. He also has a passion for wildlife, particularly North American bears with whom he has had around 20 encounters! As much as I love to cook, Paul likes to eat and spends his time on the blog regaling you with many a foodie story.
We decided to venture RTW simply because waiting for retirement wasn’t a good enough bet for us. In our early 30s we were fit, healthy and financially able to do the trip – as far as we were concerned there was no reason not to. It was the best experience of our lives and has cemented an already deep love of exploring. We’re at the stage in our lives where we want to slow down a bit and have a home base but stay tuned while we show you how to make the most of those weekends and use annual leave to get out and see as much as possible.
